Stooshe

Stooshe Download captured more than my attention back when the lyric video of ‘Betty Woz Gone’ bounced into my inbox one wintery November, followed by their vibrant anthology of originals and cover sewn together to create a tapestry of cheeky attitude and glorious harmonies, the way they should be sung. Over the past few months Stooshe have performed an array of covers, some better than the originals even, and the relationship between the threesome is naturally infectious and full of positive energy, showcasing the girls to be first class role models to young girls of today.

Their debut single sprung straight to the top 10, a radio friendly rework of their promiscuous original, and with a little help from their friend Travis McCoy, it was inevitable that the UK and beyond will instantly fall in love with their music as well as the girls in general. Even whilst I was chatting to Camila from Uh Huh Her, Stooshe popped up in conversation as half of the delightful duo from America mentioned she definitely wants to check out the ladies out over the summer. Stooshe are teasing their fans by dropping a 1 minute 20 second preview of their next single ‘Black Heart’ for us to check out, which is definitely not enough. What a way to drive us crazy! So, I’ve snooped around on the interweb and found a delicious acapella version of the single in full, which they sang at the end of a UStream session, which satisfies our craving just a little bit. The power and the fantastic connection between the girls is just phenomenal, and even in this impromptu display it’s evident that there is a fabulous future for the trio.

‘Black Heart’ itself is a modern day love song where the protagonist falls "in love with a monster", and the overwhelming waves of passion that washes over her scares her to her core as she realises how strong these feelings are, which in turn weakens the walls she puts around her as she allows the guy into her heart. The honesty and realisation that they’re under his spell adds to the innocence of explaining to her parents the sheer horror behind letting someone have such control over their happiness and desires. It’s a message that a vast amount of us can relate to in one way or another, so it adds another dimension to the Stooshe force.

The fact that this version is stripped back and raw adds to the essence of the ballade, yet after listening to the preview, I can’t actually wait to hear the piece in full.
