Lorde

Lorde
 Tennis Court EP [Explicit]

is the latest pop thing to come out of New Zealand, a country that's hardly well known for its music.  The precocious sixteen year old is bounding onto the music scene with this EP of dark electro pop, hints of hip-hop, a snarling vocal and youthful lyrics.  Apparently the "tennis courts" are the new bike sheds.

Sound familiar?  The comparison with Charli XCX is an obvious one and in the fast paced world of pop, Lorde marks a considerable adversary for the UK starlet.  That said, this 'Tennis Court' EP lacks the developed production of 'True Romance',

Fall Out Boy - Alone Together

Fat Out Boy
 Save Rock & Roll

official video for “Alone Together.” It’s the fourth clip to surface off April’s Save Rock And Roll, and I dare say it’s the best to date. The visual opens with all four members tied up in separate locations, each more terrifying than the last. As the song kicks in, our stars struggle for freedom, fight unwanted attention, and oh yeah, Pete Wentz kills someone. It’s the first FOB video since “I Don’t Care” that you will be unable to forget, and the best part is the song is still the best part. You can view the video at the end of this post.

2 Chainz

2 Chainz
says things like "I'm known to kick it like the captain of the soccer team" and "Money on the rise, like I'm counting on an elevator," continuing his reign as the worst writer to morph into an amazing rapper in five years. Pharrell pairs the squinty-bright synthesizers he loves with hard, menacing drums. It's gaudy, emphatic, elbows-out, and indelibly catchy: It's 2 Chainz in beat form.

The Weight of Your Love retains just a little bit of that Interpol-ness (the song “Formaldehyde” might be the best song that Echo and the Bunnymen never wrote, for one) while adding something else to the mix. That something else can be summed up by an underground comic I read some time ago: Imagine a marquee for an arena reading that the band Rock will be playing later that evening. Certainly, there’s a big arena rock sound to The Weight of Your Love that might have some listeners reaching for Coldplay comparisons, even though frontman Tom Smith has indicated that the sound of the record was influenced by “American” bands such as R.E.M. and Arcade Fire. (Nevermind the fact that Arcade Fire is Canadian.) Now, I tend to like the odd Coldplay song here and there, but their sound is so generally bland and forgettable that I tend to think that the emergence of that group is akin to the breaking of one of those seals that herald the coming of the apocalypse.

"There's been a lot of career highs and lows over the years of being in a band, but in the end, how many can say they shot a video on the top of the Empire State Building? We win,” said Karen O in a press release. “Move out the way, King Kong, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are gonna get real with you up in this piece!” Watch as the band performs the track while the sun rises over New York City, in the video below, via Noisey.
Karen O talked about working with Daughters (who directed the YYYs videos for "Maps", "Turn Into", "Date With the Night", and "Gold Lion")
