Arctic Monkeys: 'We're not a sing-a-longy kind of band'

Monkeys have said that they don't believe they are a band you can describe as "a sing-a-longy" band.

The Sheffield rockers, who are currently touring Australia, have spoken about their first trip to the country in 2006 and revealed that they were "blown back" by the reception they got.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner said: "Everyone was singing and we were all kind of blown back. No one feels obligated to sing at our gigs: we're not a sing-a-longy kind of band and sometimes there are quite a lot of words. So when people do sing along they mean it."

Alex Turner had previously admitted that he's ''forgotten'' how to write a hit single.

The singer says that despite having five Top Five singles between the years 2005 and 2007 with his band, he no longer knows how to make a smash hit.

The singer said: "I have fucking forgotten how to do that… I don't know what that is any more, it's a different landscape these days.

Lost Radiohead track 'How Do You Sit Still' revealed as a hoax - audio

A lost Radiohead track, which was supposedly recorded by the band in the early 1990s, has been revealed as a hoax.

The title of the track was given as both 'Putting Ketchup In The Fridge' and 'How Do You Sit Still' by Radiohead fan site Ateaseweb.com, which wrote of the track: "A track surfaced today with vocals sounding like Thom Yorke's together with a Radiohead sound that could’ve been recorded in the early nineties. Think 'Pablo Honey', 'The Bends'."

However, according to CNN, the track is actually the work of singer-songwriter Christopher Stopa, who revealed that he found out that his 2001 track 'Sit Still' was being labelled as a lost Radiohead song when he sat down to listen to the track online.

Stopa runs a bakery in Canada and was once in a band called Morris Air. You can listen to his track by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.

Last month, two previously unreleased Radiohead demos were posted online. The songs, 'Everybody Knows' and 'Girl (In The Purple Dress)', were recorded when the band were still known as On A Friday and before guitarist Jonny Greenwood joined the band.

Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher has said that the band he would most like to see reunited is The Smiths.

The guitarist, who released his debut solo album 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' on October 17 this year, has said that the reunion of the Manchester legends is the band reunion that "everybody would like to see". He also said that though he can see why people are sceptical about the chances of such a reunion, similar thoughts were held about the possibility of The Stone Roses and Led Zeppelin reuniting.

Asked by Sky News Australia about which band he would most like to see reunited, he replied: "The one everybody would like to see is The Smiths and they say it's not going to happen but they said the Roses wouldn't happen and they said Led Zeppelin wouldn't happen."

Gallagher also said he thought The Stone Roses' reunion shows would "be great" and that he was "happy for them".

He added: "I'm happy for them, it's great for the fans. It's going to be great, what can I say?".

Noel Gallagher tours the UK next year, with arena dates booked in February and September.

Cold Play

Coldplay's Chris Martin threw singing intruder out of his garden.Chris Martin has revealed that he was forced to throw an intruder singing Coldplay songs out of his garden.

The frontman told the Daily Mirror that he had given some singing tips to the trespasser, who had climbed over his garden wall, before asking him to leave.

He said:
I had a guy the other day who climbed over the gate of our house and started singing Coldplay songs to his friends on the street.
Martin also jokingly revealed that he'd told the man that he wasn't singing the songs correctly, telling him: '"Listen, you're just not doing that right.'"

The singer added: "He politely left. It was bordering on intrusion. Still, it's nice that people like the songs."

Coldplay released their fifth studio album 'Mylo Xyloto' in October this year. Earlier this month, Martin admitted that he thinks Lady Gaga is a better songwriter than him.

Coldplay will play a massive UK tour next summer, playing a total of seven shows at football stadiums, including three nights at Arsenal FC's Emirates Stadium.

George Michael

George Michael has spoken after his life-threatening bout of pneumonia to reveal that he's had his "best Christmas" ever this year.

The singer, who gave a press conference last week in which he confirmed that doctors in Austria had spent three weeks keeping him alive and described his condition as "touch and go", took to Twitter to assure fans he was fully on the mend.

In a series of posts written on December 26, he said:

Best Christmas I can remember, surrounded by the people I love. And knowing that Xmas could have been very different this year for everyone at that table.
He went on to add: "As it was we stuffed and laughed ourselves silly. I'm such a lucky man! I hope you all had a great one."

Michael, who had previously told reporters that he was unable to speak for extended periods of time as he recovered from his illness, also said that his problems with his voice would only be "temporary".

It was reported last week (December 22) that he been released from hospital and would be flying home to London. It was initially thought that although Michael's condition was improving, he was unlikely to be out of hospital in time for Christmas.

Michael was admitted to Vienna's AKH hospital last month after ill health forced him to cancel a gig in the Austrian capital. The illness forced Michael to shelve all of his tour dates for 2011 and reschedule them for next year.

He told the LA Times: I've got mixed emotions about what the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame actually really is, but at the same time, there's a lot of people the fans that it just means something to them, and they're happy. Kasabian

An album uncertain of its direction, from a band making the journey very interesting."It's been 15 or 16 years since the last truly classic album, but I think we've done it," Serge Pizzorno claims of Velociraptor!, which is exactly the kind of bullish boasting which, along with their boorish interviews and boozy gang attitude, have made it easy to pigeonhole Kasabian as the Leicestershire Oasis. This is unfortunate, as their actual music has always been much more interesting and eclectic. From the start, their ease with club beats and electronica suggested that – unlike the Gallaghers – they had some awareness of which decade they were in. And while Oasis became duller and more conservative with each new record, Kasabian have – so far – grown more adventurous. June's teaser single, Switchblade Smiles.

Neol Gallagher Album

He knows what he likes, and has turned his influences into an enjoyable solo debut.Songwriters who listen to too many records can struggle to come up with fresh ideas for their own. They're too cowed by their own taste, too aware of pantheons and precedence, and too easily influenced by old and dusty sonic blueprints. It's hard to say whether this is a greater problem for the artist or the listener. Certainly it would be easy to provide a list of reference points for Noel Gallagher's pugnacious solo debut, some of which come from his old band – two songs reference Wonderwall. But that's missing the point. Which is: Noel's got his confidence back. After years of watered-down Oasis albums, where anyone with a band membership and a silk scarf could throw an authentically scuffed tune into the pot, this is not a tentative recovery, nor does it bluster and huff. It rests on a bed of quiet authority, that sense of calm over turmoil, which comes from Noel's mournfully bullish voice.

Bruno Mars

Mars’ solo debut is geared for maximum appeal Every day, life presents us with puzzling posers. Why did the Crazy Frog have a penis? It makes no sense. Others are far easier to tackle. Recently, the music press asked, for roughly the nth time: is rock dead? The foundation for said inquisition: rock tracks accounted for only three of the UK's 100 top-selling singles of 2010. And the answer is, of course, no. But it's the success of jack-of-all-trades artists like Bruno Mars (pop, soul, reggae, RnB – he has a crack at them all), whose two British singles to date have both topped the chart, that threatens rock's influence on this nation's impressionable youths. Which is, frankly, a disaster in waiting – this is some of the most uninspired music one might stumble across in 2011. Doo-Wops & Hooligans rather lays its cards on the table with its title alone – doo-wop suggests simplicity and accessibility, but hooligans, well, they can be trouble. Appropriately, this is immediate fare, every little motif and melody geared for maximum commercial appeal (i.e. the record lacks any individuality or personality whatsoever, unfolding as a mush of well-known artists past and present).

Little Mix

Little Mix have revealed they are planning to meet with record label boss Simon Cowell in the new year, thanking the music mogul for his support during The X Factor final. As we previously reported, Cowell had expressed his love of the girls on Twitter, telling his followers he believes they "could be stars." Speaking of SiCo, Jade Thirlwall told Digital Spy: "It was lovely. It was really nice of him. We're seeing his tweets, but we haven't had the chance to actually speak to him yet," Leigh-Anne Pinnock then stated: "He said he's going to see us when he gets back, so I'm guessing that will be next year some time."

Jessie J

It’s all well and good having a multi-octave voice, but without control it’s an accident waiting to happen. Jessie J – born Jessica Cornish in Redbridge – rushes up and down her scales on this anticipated debut album; but there’s more than one occasion where her fluctuating pitch is a pain in the ear. The frustration doesn’t end there. As evidenced by her breakthrough debut single, Do It Like a Dude, Cornish has an annoying habit of inserting zany tics where songs would benefit from being played straighter (one Ke$ha is quite enough, thanks). A pretty acoustic ballad, Big White Room – recorded live, applause included – is ruined by unnecessary gymnastics. A shame, as when she’s not overreaching Cornish showcases sweet, if unspectacular, vocals. http://www.the-tube.co.uk

Westlife

They arrived in the middle of a pre-X Factor boyband boom, five guys standing in a line, looking constipated in love, and plucking imaginary keys out of the air. In popular memory, every new single was a ballad, ending with a key-change, the boom of a confetti cannon, and a sudden leap off a line of stools. Fourteen number one singles and one former bandmate later and they’re leaving amid a craze for cavernously anthemic pop/classical albums, made by stubbly men in tuxedos who don’t care about credibility.

Olly Murs

Murs seems to be pop's answer to Jamie Oliver: a bit bland but unfailingly affable and a massive hit with the mums. ("I'm OK" even has the happy chappy line: "I jumped on my Vespa, ride through the gloom".) Unlike Oliver, though, he's dishing up mostly pabulum: this second album is characterised by cheesy, soul-flavoured pop, the sort that's nice enough soundtracking a KFC advert, but too much and its very inoffensiveness begins to offend. There's zip, though, to single "Heart Skips a Beat", a nagging ska track featuring Brit rap duo Rizzle Kicks, suggesting perhaps Murs just needs a little help from his friends http://www.the-tube.co.uk
A dignified reminder of Winehouse’s talent – but what more could she have achieved? Amy Winehouse performed, wrote and lived with a seductive and startling blend of confidence and vulnerability. Her early death may not have been a huge surprise to anyone who had an interest in her life, but it shocked her beloved Camden and far beyond because she was one of us. She may have had an exquisite voice redolent of broken hearts and lost weekends, but even when Amy was selling millions of records she could be found shooting pool and downing drinks in north London pubs.

Rebecca Ferguson

An impressive debut album with the focus firmly on Ferguson's great voice. She came second to Matt Cardle on last year's X Factor, but unlike her hat-clad vanquisher, Rebecca Ferguson has yet to criticise her alma mater or claim "there's a lot of conspiracy" to the events of 9/11. The 25-year-old Liverpudlian has conducted herself in a fashion unexpected from a talent show star – with dignity.
