Trey Songz‘s

Trey Songz‘sDownload
has stayed behind in the world of urban, remaining a permanent fixture on the R&B charts for years with the odd crossover smash like “Bottom’s Up” and “Say Ahh” here and there. But in a music industry where genre lines are increasingly being blurred, how does an artist like Trey Songz keep the crossover success going without selling his soul to David Guetta?
The answer could be Benny Blanco, who’s behind Trey’s new single “Heart Attack”.

Blanco brings a bit of edge to Songz’s sound on the expletive-heavy breakup tune, combining course language and splashes of electronica into a traditionally radio-friendly R&B beat. It’s still very much a standard Trey Songz song, but with a few minor tweaks to make it pop.
Songz is an adequate vocalist and it’s always refreshing when he locks up the overly-sexual stuff for something a little more serious, but despite Blanco’s best efforts, there’s nothing about “Heart Attack” that’s going to get your blood pumping. It’s adequate, sufficient, and listenable — and also the poor man’s “Climax”.
“Heart Attack” sounds destined for solid airplay on R&B stations across the States, so I can only hope that this is just a warm-up for Trey’s comeback, and that the second single will be able to stack up against the likes of “Can’t Help But Wait” and “Say Ahh”.
