Coldplay score first Number One of 2012 with 'Paradise

Coldplay have scored the first Number One single of 2012 after 'Paradise' climbed to the top spot tonight (January 1).

The rise of the track, which was released 10 weeks ago, has been partly attributed to the band's performance during the final of The X Factor last month. It's the second time Chris Martin and co have reached the summit of the chart - their last UK Number One was 'Viva La Vida' in 2008, according to the Official Charts Company.

Elsewhere, Olly Murs rose four places to Number Two, while the Christmas Number One, Military Wives Choir's 'Wherever You Are' was down to Number 4. In a lean week for new releases, there were no new entries in the Top 20.

In the albums chart, Ed Sheeran rose eight places to claim the top spot with his debut album '+', while Bruno Mars climbed nine places to Number Two with 'Doo Wops & Hooligans'.

Amy Winehouse's posthumous album 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' fell three places to Number 5, while Adele's '21' racked up its 49th week on the chart at Number 6.

Further down the chart, Kasabian's 'Velociraptor!' (Number 14), The Vaccines' 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines' (Number 33) and The Black Keys' 'El Camino' (Number 38) all re-entered the chart.JECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/swflash.cab" id="Player_d2e926f7-6f3c-4047-b88b-9874d611c4dc" WIDTH="250px" HEIGHT="250px">
