Matt Cardle The Fire
Freddie Matthews writes from London: Southampton born Matt Cardle is a former winner of The X Factor but that was 2 years and 1 album ago. In winning the competition he also won a lucrative recording contract with SYCO music, Simon Cowell’s record company. After winning the X Factor Cardle released his winner’s single, a cover version of the Biffy Clyro song Many Of Horror. Cardle and SYCO retitled the single When We Collide which was merely to give the song more appeal taken from an alternative lyric. It was Matt Cardle’s first taste of solo chart success, as the song would become not only the Christmas number 1 but it also stayed there for the New Year and for the week following.
Unlike all other X Factor winners, Matt Cardle’s record deal is not only with SYCO but is a joint deal with Columbia Records, which comes under the Sony Group of record companies. The debut album Letters was released on 17 October 2011 and although staying in the album chart top 40 for 16 weeks, it only managed a number 2 position at best. Run For Your Life was the only single success from the album. Written by Gary Barlow, it peaked at number 6 in the Official UK Singles Chart. The album went on to sell a mediocre 270,000 copies.
These statistics tell the true story. Matt Cardle has only been successful while and during being a part of the X Factor model. Regardless of his talent, as a solo artist he just can’t cut it. It was only thanks to the X Factor that the debut single sold over 1 million copies. His track record since goes to prove that Matt Cardle is no Leona Lewis. Her debut album sold an incredible 3 million plus copies.
