One Direction
The X Factor is engulfed in another fakery row after it emerged One Direction’s “live” performance on Saturday was recorded in October.
Bosses were slammed yesterday for misleading viewers after host Dermot O’Leary pointed at the stage and gave the boyband a thumbs-up despite them not being there.
One fan, Riley Bowden, tweeted: “How can last night’s X Factor live performance be recorded last month.”
And another, Kieran Watkins, wrote: “Another X Factor scandal... everything about that show is fake.”
Saturday’s show was billed as “live from London” and the judges wore the same clothes as they did for the recording to complete the illusion.
But members Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, both 19, and Louis Tomlinson, 20, were spotted out and about in Los Angeles at exactly the same time. The performance of new single Little Things was recorded on October 30. O’Leary never actually said it was live – but there was no suggestion otherwise.
The presenter instead gave the impression 1D were right there in the studio.
He told viewers: “We have been celebrating the best of British tonight and they don’t come any bigger or any more British than our next special guest. The Mirror
“They have conquered the world and it all began for them here. We’re the proudest parents on the planet as we welcome back with their new single – One Direction.”
The judges were seen on their feet after the performance in the same outfits.
An X Factor spokesman said: “One Direction were pre-recorded as they are out of the country this weekend. The X Factor played it out as live but we have never tried to hide the fact it was a pre-record.”
A source added: “To have the best guest stars we have to work around their schedules.”
It is not the first fakery row to hit the show. MPs accused bosses of cheating viewers in 2010 after they doctored singers’ voices to make them sound better.
In last night’s results show, District 3 were voted off after a tense sing-off with fellow boyband Union J.One Direction “live-gate” is dominating the headlines – but there are so many other things to think about.
X Factor is now at the halfway point, and it’s clear what needs to happen. The three contenders are James Arthur, Ella and Jahmene. They are all talented but Jahmene must win. He has zero confidence and is heartbreakingly self-critical. He needs the validation of winning. The only way he’ll believe in himself is if we give him no option.
Anyway, bye bye District 3 and more great judging Louis, well done.
