Download played a stint of recent dates in Los Angeles, headlining the Honda Center and two nights at the Stapes Center. Prior to the shows, they performed an intimate invite-only show at KROQ's Red Bull Sound Space, where we caught up with singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach to get the latest in band's world.Billboard
The band, which includes drummer Patrick Carney, will soon begin work on the followup to last year's "El Camino," which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. "We have a couple of months blocked early next year, like February/March," he explained, adding that he's been writing a bit but doesn't have anything concrete yet. "Pat and I don't practice or rehearse until we go in to make the record so we won't really know what it's going to be like or what's going to happen till we get in the studio and start working on it."
According to Auerbach, the plan is to lock themselves into the studio and bang out the album -- which will be their eighth -- in two months, "or two weeks." "We usually start around 11 and then work till 3 or 4 in the morning and that's everyday. Our favorite place to be is in the studio."
As far as where the recording will take place, Auerbach says it probably won't be at his newly built studio in downtown Nashville, although nothing is confirmed. "I think we're going to try to get out of town to do it. It's really just about getting away from our friends and family so we can just focus."
Auerbach admitted that while "El Camino" has outsold its predecessor, "Brothers," he likes the older album better.
"Our records are not really representations of our current sound. They are more of a Polaroid of those couple weeks in time for us and that's how our records kind of live, for me anyway. I listen to a record and I remember what I was listening to that week, where we were eating lunch and what kind of car we were driving and stuff like that."
In the meantime, Auerbach has been keeping busy as a producer, working on upcoming albums for guitar player Bombino, singer-songwriter Hanni El Khatib and country newcomer Nikki Lane.
"She's amazing," he said. "They'e all really good and Nikki's really special."
